The Lord of the Rings is an epic high-fantasy novel written by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is the best-selling novel ever written, with over 150 million copies sold. The book is a story about Frodo and a ring. Frodo was a Hobbit and he saved the world. He had to take the ring and throw it into a mountain of fire. The baddies tried to stop Frodo and his friends. The best part of the book was at the end when Gollum wanted the ring. He tried to take it from Frodo. But Gollum failed. He fell into the mountain of fire - with the ring. (Energy for Bulgaria for 5th grade, SB p. 102) Fifty years later a film series consisting of three high fantasy adventure films were made directed by Peter Jackson. The series was a major financial success, with the films collectively being among the highest-grossing film series of all time. The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 total Academy Award nominations. The final film in the series, The Return of the King, won all of its 11 Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture. Read more about THE LORD OF THE RINGS here. |
